Why Harry Potter is the Greatest...

Many years back, Erin was engulfed in the trend that was 'Harry Potter' and tried repeatedly to get me to read it and I refused. My mom even went as far a few years back as buying the first book "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." I never really had the time let alone the desire to read such things. As recently as last year, Vicky made a valiant attempt to get me into them. The books were written for kids and since I enjoyed the movies (which were seemingly made for kids as well), I figured I didn't need the books. I was wrong. VERY wrong.

Last summer I took the promotion at work and was coming down to the wire as far as school and graduation goes, so I started having plenty of free time on my hands. This meant more sleep and train rides where I could actually stay awake. With such long commutes and nothing to do, I decided that I would take that first book and finally join the cult...

It got me hooked. I read the first 3 books in about 3 weeks and anxiously awaited reading the 4th book but never got the chance. The summer semester ended and the person who was supplying me with the Harry Potter books went back to Massachusetts. Then in the fall semester, I never had the time to read since I was getting ready to finish school and working full time. So, come this past semester, I had more free time again and decided that it was time to pick the books back up again.

I read the 4th book, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" in a week. It. Was. AMAZING. That propelled me into a month long Harry Potter fugue. I finished the series (book 4, 5, 6 and 7) in about a month. It took up most of my free time. It was also well worth it. I can't even describe how great it felt to read each book.

The sights and sounds and feel of each book filled me with such excitement and nostalgia. I could not put any of them down. Reading them and being along for the ride that was Harry's experience at Hogwarts was so much fun that it saddened me to no end when it was all over.

*Sigh*

Anyway, I am in the process of purchasing all the books I don't already have so I can reread the series to prepare for the 6th movie's premier. It will be awesome.

I am currently reading Akira Kurosawa's autobiography and although the translation into English makes it a little clunky at times, it is still very insightful and poignantly funny. On top of that, Steve insisted that I read the prequel book to the Halo video game series. I continue to read it because I was so addicted to the games but as far as being a piece of literature, it is no Harry Potter...
